HNU Invited to Publish Articles in Top International Chemistry Journals

2024-07-16

Recently, Professors Wang Jianji and Zhuo Kelei from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of HNU were invited to publish a perspective article in the prestigious international journal, Journal of the American Chemical Society. The article is entitled The Mass-Balancing Between Positive and Negative Electrodes for Optimizing Energy Density of Supercapacitors. Both Wang Jianji and Zhuo Kelei are corresponding authors, with graduate student Jing Liangqi serving as the first author. This research was funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China and the “111” Project.

The article points out that supercapacitors are a critical energy storage technology. Achieving mass balance by adjusting the mass ratio of active materials on the positive and negative electrodes can significantly enhance the energy density of asymmetric supercapacitors. Despite its importance, the concept of mass balance has not been systematically studied and is often misunderstood and misapplied. This paper provides a clear definition of mass balancing in supercapacitors, deriving relevant formulas, analyzing the impact of mass balance on electrochemical performance under different conditions, and offering ten guidelines for implementing mass balancing. In particular, a thorough discussion is presented on mass balancing within ionic liquid electrolyte systems. New perspectives and strategies are proposed for mass balancing in pseudocapacitive materials, hybrid devices, and electrodes with differing open-circuit potentials. The analyses and guidelines presented herein aid in understanding and achieving mass equilibrium, serving as a reference for the development of high-performance supercapacitors.

Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), as the flagship journal of the American Chemical Society, is one of the globally renowned, top-tier publications in the field of chemistry and its interdisciplinary areas. The Perspective articles, written by invitation from the editors, aim to inspire and guide future research endeavors.
