College of Mathematics and Information Science

2024-07-21

College of Mathematics and Information Science has a long history, with its origins dating back to the establishment of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Zhongzhou University (now Henan University) in 1923 and the Department of Mathematics at Pingyuan Teachers College in 1951. This makes it one of the earliest departments of our university. In May 2022, the School of Cryptography was founded.

The college focuses on two main disciplines: mathematics and statistics. It offers four undergraduate majors, including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, which is recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Major and National Specialty Major. Another undergraduate major is Information and Computational Science, which is considered a first-batch Provincial First-class Undergraduate Major, and National Specialty Major. In addition, the college offers Information Management and Information Systems, as well as Applied Statistics, both of which are regarded as Provincial First-class Undergraduate Majors. The college has established several important research facilities and centers. It has a postdoctoral research station in mathematics, a doctoral degree program in mathematics, and a masters degree program in statistics.

Furthermore, the college is actively involved in various national and provincial cooperative projects. It is a co-building unit for the Tianyuan Mathematical Center in Central China, and a construction unit for the Applied Mathematics Center of Henan Province. The school is also participating in the redevelopment of the Mathematics Research Institute of the Henan Academy of Sciences. The school houses several key laboratories and research centers, including the Henan Provincial Engineering Laboratory for Big Data Statistical Analysis and Optimization Control, the Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Mathematics and Scientific Computing, the Xinxiang City Key Laboratory for Experimental Design, and the Henan Province's Base for Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction at institutions of higher learning.

The college currently has 132 staff members (including 114 full-time teachers), of whom 3 are dual-appointed academicians, 1 is a Cheung Kong Scholars Chair Professor , 2 are specially-appointed professors of Henan Province, and 1 is a provincial Distinguished Professor. There are 23 professors, 42 associate professors, and 105 with doctoral degrees, including 16 doctoral supervisors. Thirteen faculty members have received recognition as Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education for the New Century and at the provincial level, and 2 have been awarded the Henan Province Science and Technology Progress Award. The colleges research spans various areas such as partial differential equations, functional analysis, differential geometry, algebra, computational mathematics, probability and statistics, experimental design, operations research and optimization, and applied mathematics.

In recent years, it has presided over more than 50 National Natural Science Foundation projects and over 40 provincial and departmental-level scientific projects, publishing annually more than 130 papers in renowned academic journals, including those indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI).
