The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was founded in 1923, formerly known as the Department of Science Chemistry of Zhongzhou University (the predecessor of National Henan University) and the Department of Chemistry of Pingyuan Normal College. It is a Governing unit of the Chinese Chemical Society and a benchmark school for national Party building work. There are currently over 240 faculty members, including more than 20 high-level talents such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The school has 3 first-level disciplines of Science, Engineering and Pharmacy, and 3 undergraduate majors of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Pharmaceutical Engineering. It has a doctoral degree authorization point in the first-level discipline of Chemistry, a postdoctoral research station in Chemistry, 5 doctoral degree authorization points in secondary disciplines, 2 master's degree authorization points in first-level disciplines, 10 master’s degree authorization points in secondary disciplines, and 3 professional master’s degree authorization points. The discipline of Chemistry has been successively selected as a Cultivation Discipline of National Key Disciplines of Henan Province, an A-class Advantage Discipline of Henan Province, an A-class Characteristic Backbone Discipline of Henan Province and a “Double First-class” Creation Discipline of Henan Province. Over the years, the discipline of Chemistry has steadily entered the top 1% of ESI ranking, with the latest ESI global ranking 381st (1.97‰) and the latest Nature Index ranking 59th among domestic universities.
The school has 14 provincial and ministerial research platforms, such as the Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base for Higher Education in Green Chemistry and Power Materials (National “111 Plan”) and the Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry Media and Reactions by the Ministry of Education. In recent years, it has presided over more than 200 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, such as the key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. It has won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the gold medal of the Chinese patents, the first prize of the Natural Science Award of Henan Province, the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Henan Province, the first prize of the Technological Invention Award of Henan Province, and many other awards. It has published more than 1700 papers in Nature Chem., J. Am. Chem. Soc. and other famous academic journals, and has transformed high-tech achievements into hundreds of millions of Yuan, making itself an important base for promoting regional scientific and technological innovation and economic development.
