College of Fisheries, established in 2012, emerged from the Fisheries program at Henan Normal University’s Biology Department. The program began enrolling students in 1984 and was the earliest undergraduate Fisheries major in Henan Province.

The school now holds primary-level authorization to grant doctoral and master’s degrees in Fisheries, as well as a professional degree authorization in Agricultural Master (Fishery Development). It has been recognized as a key discipline in Fisheries for Henan Province. The school currently offers two undergraduate programs: Aquaculture and Aquarium Science & Technology. The Aquaculture program is part of the Ministry of Education’s Excellence in Agriculture and Forestry Talent Training Program and has been selected as a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Point.

With a faculty of 69 members, including 54 full-time teachers, the school possesses 8 professors, 26 associate professors, 7 doctoral supervisors, and 38 master’s supervisors. The school includes 1 member of the Fisheries Teaching Guidance Committee under the Ministry of Education, 1 recipient of the Science and Technology Innovation Leader of the Central Plain Talent Plan, 1 national-level scientist for the Modern Agricultural Industry System, and 2 provincial-level experts for the Modern Agricultural Industry System in Henan Province.

The school has developed distinctive research directions, including Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Aquatic Animal Medicine, Conservation of Aquatic Genetic Resources, Research and Development in Aquatic Engineering Technology, Aquatic Environmental Toxicology, Aquatic Animal Enhancement and Culture, Genetic Breeding of Aquatic Animals, Lipid Nutrition and Immunity in Aquatic Animals, Aquatic Interfacial Microecology, and Aquatic Ecology.

The college has undertaken over 100 vertical projects, such as those from National Natural Science Foundation, and more than 80 horizontal projects, including ecological restoration and environmental assessment. Faculty members have published over 220 academic papers in national and international journals, authored 2 scholarly monographs, applied for 20 national invention patents, and received 2 provincial/ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement awards, as well as 3 provincial/ministerial-level outstanding teaching achievement awards.

Introduction of the Team

Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Feed Team: it focuses on achieving modern fisheries development goals such as high yield and quality, ecological safety, and regional characteristics. They engage in thorough research on the fundamental theories and practical technologies of nutrition and feed, approaching the subject from various perspectives and levels. The team is committed to driving industry progress through innovative results, offering reliable and timely technical support and intellectual resources to promote the sustainable development of aquaculture industry in Henan Province, which aims to establish the team as a center of expertise for professionals in inland areas, specializing in aquatic animal nutrition and feed studies.

Aquatic Animal Medicine Team: it is committed to conducting both theoretical and applied research on common technical issues related to preventing and controlling major aquatic animal diseases. It develops effective vaccines and advanced disease control technologies that will drive the industry’s growth through innovation, and offers high-quality technical support and intellectual resources for the establishment and advancement of modern fishery systems in Henan Province.

Aquatic Ecology Team: it is dedicated to conducting long-term research on the protection and exploitation of aquatic biodiversity, assessment of water environment health, and study of ecological restoration.

Interfacial Microecology Team: it conducts research in interface microorganisms related to aquaculture, focusing on both fundamental and applied aspects. The team examines the regulatory effects and interaction mechanism of interface microorganisms on hosts metabolism, immunity, and behaviors, and explores the ecological roles of microbial communities in aquatic environments.

Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Team: it is dedicated to identifying important genes responsible for key characteristics in aquatic organisms, creating new cultivated strains, discovering potential candidates for aquaculture, improving the genetic composition of aquaculture breeds, and promoting the conservation of fishery resources and sustainable utilization.
