In 1975, the Foreign Language Department was established as a precursor to the Faculty of International Studies, which was later established in November 2000. Subsequently, in July 2012, HNU had a realignment, contributing to the merger of the former Foreign Language Teaching & Research Department with the Faculty of International Studies.The faculty consists of the English Department, Translation Department, Japanese Department, French Department, Russian Department, Foreign Language Teaching & Research Department for Postgraduates, and Foreign Language Teaching & Research Department for Undergraduates.
Currently, the faculty offers five undergraduate majors: English, Translation, Japanese, French, and Russian. Among them, English major and Japanese major run National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Points, while Translation major and French major run Provincial First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Points. Additionally, it is authorized to grant first-class master’s degree program in Foreign Language and Literature as well as professional master’s degrees in Education, Translation and Interpreting. And the faculty enrolls doctoral students in Comparative Literature and World Literature, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and International Chinese Language Education.
In recent years, the faculty members have undertaken 18 National Social Science Projects ,11 Humanities and Social Science Projects of the Ministry of Education, 25 Philosophical and Social Science Projects of Henan Province, and have been awarded 12 awards for outstanding achievements in Philosophical and Social Sciences of Henan Province. Additionally, we have undertaken more than 50 other provincial and ministerial projects, with a total research funding exceeding 3.6 million yuan. Furthermore, we collaborated with the Henan Foreign Affairs Office to establish the Henan Foreign Affairs Translation Corpus Research Center. In 2022, the Research Team for Foreign Language Teachers’ Development in Basic Education was recognized as an Innovative Team.
The faculty currently comprises 155 teachers, including 12 professors, 43 associate professors, and 33 doctors (and additional 8 teachers pursuing their doctoral studies). There are 55 graduate supervisors, including 7 doctoral supervisors and 48 master’s supervisors. It is also fortunate to have international teachers from the UK, the USA, France, Japan, and Russia throughout the year.
1. Introduction of Research Teams
Faculty of International Studies currently has five research teams, covering the fields of Foreign Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Curriculum and Teaching Methodology, Translation, and International and Regional Studies. Many of the team members are professors and PhDs with overseas study backgrounds. The team includes national and provincial academic leaders in English studies, national role models in teaching ethics, outstanding mentors for Master of English Education, provincial innovative talents in science and technology, education experts for primary and secondary school teachers in Henan Province, as well as recipients of the Henan Provincial May 1st Labor Medal. There are 11 experts serving as peer reviewers for The National Social Science Fund of China and 5 members holding positions as presidents or vice presidents in national and provincial academic organizations.
2. Research Directions
The main research directions focus on Foreign Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Translation Studies, International and Regional Studies, Language Acquisition, and Foreign Language Teaching.
3. Major Achievements
In recent years, the research teams of the Faculty have been approved for 16 projects funded by The National Social Science Fund of China, including 1 key project. Additionally, they have undertaken 5 major and key provincial and ministerial projects, 8 projects funded by the Ministry of Education in the field of humanities and social sciences, 26 projects under the Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Planning and Cultural Promotion Programs, and over 50 other various provincial and ministerial projects (including provincial educational reform projects). The teams have received more than 10 awards for Outstanding Achievements in Social Sciences in Henan Province. They have published over 110 academic papers in CSSCI and higher-level journals and released more than 50 monographs and books.
