College of Physical Education, formerly known as the Department of Physical Education of Xinxiang Normal College established in 1975, was renamed the Department of Physical Education of Henan Normal University in 1985 and officially became College of Physical Education in 2000.
There are 119 faculty and staff members, including 9 professors, 41 associate professors, and 46 faculty members holding doctoral degrees; 3 doctoral supervisors, 2 international-level referees, and 12 national-level referees; over 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students.
The college is authorized to confer a first-level Master’s degree in Physical Education, along with three Master’s degree specializations in Sports Teaching, Athletic Training, and Social Sports Guidance, as well as a Master’s degree in Discipline Education (Physical Education). It has been approved as a National Sports Culture Research Base by the General Administration of Sport of China, one of the first national pilot schools for first aid education, a demonstration base for ethnic traditional sports projects in Henan Province, a training base for basketball referees (coaches) in Henan Province, a training base for soccer referees in Henan Province, a Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching in Sports Human Science in Henan Province, and a Research Center for the Inheritance and Development of Sports Culture in Central China. The college also boasts a National Quality Course (Volleyball), a National Quality Resource Sharing Course (Volleyball), and a Key Discipline of Henan Province (Physical Education).
In recent years, the college has led 20 projects funded by National Social Science Fund of China, over 90 provincial research projects from the Ministry of Education of PRC, the General Administration of Sport of China, and the Henan Provincial Department of Philosophy and Social Science, and has published over 70 textbooks planned by the Ministry of Education of PRC and academic monographs. Over the past five years, faculty members have published more than 400 academic papers, with over 200 of these in core journals and over 30 in top-tier sports science journals.
The college offers seven undergraduate programs: Physical Education, Sports Training, Sports Kinesiology, Martial Arts and Ethnic Traditional Sports, Dance Choreography (Sports Dance Direction), Soccer, and Sports Rehabilitation. Among these, Physical Education is recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program. The Physical Education program, in collaboration with the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture, was approved as a Chinese-Foreign Cooperative Education Project by the Ministry of Education of PRC in 2018 (the second nationwide). The college also hosts national high-level sports teams in volleyball, soccer, and taekwondo. Facilities include a comprehensive sports hall, a ball games hall, a swimming hall, four standard track and field stadiums, 14 tennis courts, 25 volleyball courts, 60 basketball courts, with an indoor area of 16,633 square meters and an outdoor area of 153,027 square meters. Additionally, there is a well-stocked library and a fully equipped sports human science laboratory.
