Founded in 1993, the College of Music and Dance is a key institution for cultivating music education talent in Henan Province. It also serves as a base for cultural exchange in Henan Province and a discipline innovation and talent introduction base in Henan Province’s higher education institutions. The College currently offers three undergraduate majors: Musicology, Musical Performance, and Dance Choreography, with the Musicology major being recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Point in 2019. It possesses a first-level Master’s degree authorization site in Arts, a professional Master’s degree authorization site in Music, and an educational Master’s degree authorization site in Discipline Teaching (Music). The main research directions include Chinese Music History, Ethnomusicology, Piano Performance Art, Vocal Performance Art, Pipa Performance Art, Guzheng Performance Art, Choral Conducting, Violin Performance Art, and Composition. The college currently has 86 faculty and staff members, including 54 professors and associate professors, 3 doctoral supervisors, 33 master’s supervisors, and 95% of the teachers in the college hold doctoral and master’s degrees.
In recent years, faculty members have undertaken over 350 research projects, including major, youth, and post-funding projects from the National Social Science Fund of Arts, small-scale repertoire and works creation funding projects from the National Art Fund, and research projects from the Ministry of Education in Humanities and Social Sciences. The College has received numerous awards, including the Gold Award in Choral Music at the 7th China Music “Golden Bell Awards,” the Excellence Award at the “14th CCTV Young Singers Grand Prix,” the Outstanding Repertoire Award at the 2nd China Campus Drama Festival (Professional Group), the Silver Award (Gold Award vacant) in Modern Dance at the 8th China Dance “Lotus Award,” and the First Prize at the 6th National Art Exhibition. It is currently the only college in China to have received the highest national awards in the three disciplines of music, drama, and dance.
